How often should a small business website be updated?

By , founder25 November 20264 min read
The short answer

Check the essentials, hours, prices, contact details, every couple of months. Add new photos or reviews whenever you have good ones. A full redesign every few years is normal and healthy.

You don't need to be tinkering with your website constantly. But a few things drift out of date faster than people expect, and leaving them wrong costs more trust than it seems.

Check every couple of months

Opening hours, prices, phone number and any seasonal information. These are the details visitors rely on directly, and getting caught out by a wrong number or an old price looks worse than having no website at all.

Add whenever you have something good

New reviews, photos of recent work, or a new service you've started offering. There's no schedule to follow here, just add it when it exists rather than letting it pile up.

Revisit the design every few years

Design trends move on, and a site that looked modern five years ago can start to look dated even if nothing on it is technically wrong. A refresh every three to five years keeps you looking current.

What you don't need to worry about

You don't need a blog post every week or constant tinkering to stay relevant. Consistency and accuracy matter far more than frequency. A correct, fast, well-designed site that's updated occasionally beats a messy one updated daily.

Where Ashcroft fits

Our managed plans include ongoing updates as standard, so when your hours, prices or photos change, you just send us the update rather than editing anything yourself.

Common questions

How often should I update my business website?+

Check core details like hours, prices and services every couple of months, and add fresh photos or reviews whenever you have them. A full redesign every few years is normal.

What happens if I never update my website?+

Out-of-date prices or hours frustrate visitors and cost you trust, and a site that never changes can start to look neglected even if the business behind it is thriving.

Does Google penalise websites that aren't updated often?+

Not directly, but fresh content and regular small changes are a mild positive signal, and a site that stays broken or outdated tends to lose rankings indirectly.
